Read Alouds - Get Ready to cast your votes!
On our 1st day of school we will be kicking off the year with an amazing new read aloud! I'll give you several hints to see if you can figure out which book it is. It is a sequel to a very popular book and was published on May 5, 2020! The first book was recently released as a movie. Can you guess?
Also, we will be casting votes on what read aloud will follow this amazing book. Above are some of my favorites from previous years. I welcome additional suggestions and I can't wait to talk with you about some of your favorites!
Independent Reading - Reading 20 or more minutes each night is an assigned homework expectation. I ask your support in helping to make this happen at home. Fifth-graders typically have the foundational skills for reading, but need to continue expanding and growing their reading skills. Research shows that regular independent reading in books that are at a “Just Right” level (not too easy, not too challenging) is a key component in continued growth of
reading skill.
Spelling – We will be assessing students on the beginning of the year Fifth Grade High Frequency word list. Students will begin to work on their own independent word list comprised of five words each week from this list as well as an additional ten words that will incorporate various academic vocabulary.
Writing – This year students will work on three major writing standards. Students will write narratives using descriptive detail, language, and clear sequence of events. We will follow this genre of narrative writing with opinion writing and then informational/explanatory text writing. We look forward to sharing their writing with you.
In addition, we will write in our Writer’s Notebooks on a regular basis.
Emphasis on writing organization and being specific in our writing continues to be emphasized.
